Students of Industrial Design learn the basic principles of design, engineering, human factors, marketing and sociology. They acquire such technical skills as computer-aided design and drafting, prototype fabrication, photography, sketching and graphics techniques. Students are introduced to design methods, color theory, product planning, visual statistics, materials, manufacturing methods, consumer psychology and environmental studies. The four and a half year nine semester curriculum, which is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, leads to the professional degree of bachelor of industrial design. Graduates will qualify for positions in industrial design consultant offices and in various industries.

This article was first published in the Spring issue of Prime , a Microsoft technology magazine for the manufacturing industry. Industrial designers develop aspects of a product that create emotional connections with the user. They integrate all aspects of form, fit and function, optimising them to create the best possible user experience. They also create visually appealing designs that can stand the test of time and ensure that the product is ergonomically suited to fit the user, including how they will functionally relate, interface or live with the product. How successfully they are able to do this can often determine the success of a product in the market. Firms that leave industrial design to the end of the engineering lifecycle, or out completely will struggle to find success in consumer-driven markets. Industrial designers face a number of challenges, as manufacturers face more competition and faster development cycles than ever before.
Packaging keeps the world organized. So what is product packaging? Product packaging design refers to the creation of the exterior of a product. That includes choices in material and form as well as graphics, colors and fonts that are used on wrapping, a box, a can, a bottle or any kind of container. I mean, how else are you going to effectively get beer into your mouth? Like any good design, packaging tells a story.

Industrial design is a process of design applied to products that are to be manufactured through techniques of mass production. All manufactured products are the result of a design process, but the nature of this process can take many forms. It can be conducted by an individual or a team, and such a team could include people with varied expertise e. It can emphasize intuitive creativity or calculated scientific decision-making , and often emphasizes both. It can be influenced by factors as varied as materials , production processes , business strategy , and prevailing social, commercial, or aesthetic attitudes.
The International Journal of Design is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal devoted to publishing research papers in all fields of design, including industrial design, visual communication design, interface design, animation and game design, architectural design, urban design, and other design related fields. It aims to provide an international forum for the exchange of ideas and findings from researchers across different cultures and encourages research on the impact of cultural factors on design theory and practice. It also seeks to promote the transfer of knowledge between professionals in academia and industry by emphasizing research in which results are of interest or applicable to design practices.
