Effective Communication: Any Role in Classroom Teaching – Learning Process in Nigerian Schools?
If we are using the media, libraries, archives and other information providers including the Internet or new technologies in the classroom, we need to consider our ways of teaching: how are we using media and other information providers? How do they impact the ways in which information is communicated to students? Communication models can provide a framework for conceptualizing the place of MIL within the teaching and learning experience. These models provide the opportunity to closely examine the roles of teachers, students and the media, libraries, archives and other information providers in the classroom. We communicate with others all the time. But how good are we at it? The English Language Institute of Singapore is helping teachers, and ultimately students, become effective communicators. She gives her take on why teachers should and how they can communicate more effectively with their students, and how students can be encouraged to do the same. Central to all that we do, it has to be the students who will benefit. We try to make it clear to schools that effective communication is more than just pronunciation, intonation or articulation. We believe in teachers and students co-constructing knowledge together, particularly in the subjects that involve multimodal aspects of communication, for example, visual data such as graphs, charts, statistics.

With most of the world in lockdown, due to the pandemic, people are working from home if they can, students are learning from home in an online format and parents are picking up the slack from teachers and supporting their children.

The premise being that there is a significant correlation between communication in the classroom and the academic performance of students, this article approaches the learning process as itself a function of communication, whereby communication is understood as a two-way interactive process. This is not to say that learning is communicatiion, nor is it to say that academic performance exists in a simple causal relationship to successful classroom communication: Successful communication between the teacher and students is a necessary condition of academic achievement. Effective teaching presupposes effective communication. The teacher makes effective communication possible by identifying the needs of the students, addressing these needs at the appropriate level, and creating a relaxed atmosphere in which a free, democratic flow of discussion is possible. Active classroom participation is not in itself sufficient, however; the cognitive processes must be brought into play.

Communicative language teaching CLT , or the communicative approach , is an approach to language teaching that emphasizes interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of study. Language learners in environments utilizing CLT techniques, learn and practice the target language through the interaction with one another and the instructor, the study of "authentic texts" those written in the target language for purposes other than language learning , and through the use of the language both in class and outside of class.
