There are many types of plant hormones.

Plant hormone

The plant growth is controlled by certain chemical substances called the plant hormones. These are also known as the growth factors, growth substances, plant growth regulators PGR or phytohormones. These can either promote or inhibit the growth of the plant. On the basis of the function there are five types of plant hormones: 1. Auxin 2.

How hormones and growth regulators affect your plants

Plant hormones also known as phytohormones are signal molecules , produced within plants , that occur in extremely low concentrations. Plant hormones control all aspects of plant growth and development, from embryogenesis , [1] the regulation of organ size, pathogen defense, [2] [3] stress tolerance [4] [5] and through to reproductive development. Phytohormones occur across the plant kingdom , and even in algae , where they have similar functions to those seen in higher plants. The word hormone is derived from Greek, meaning set in motion. Plant hormones affect gene expression and transcription levels, cellular division, and growth.

Types of plant hormones and their functions

Plant hormones and growth regulators are chemicals that affect:. These growth-regulating substances most often are applied as a spray to foliage or as a liquid drench to the soil around a plant's base. Applied concentrations of these substances usually are measured in parts per million ppm and in some cases parts per billion ppb. Generally, their effects are short-lived, and they may need to be reapplied in order to achieve the desired effect.

Many factors can cause and affect cell growth in the plant such as external environmental and internal factors; one of the most important internal factors is plant growth hormones. Many hormones required for cell growth, such as auxins, gibberellins, brassinosteroids, ethylene, jasmonates, salicylic acid, strigolactones and cytokinins which able to accelerate or promote growth, but, some hormone-like abscisic acid has an adverse effect on growth which increases seed dormancy by inhibiting cell growth. Also, plant hormones are able to breakdowns dormancy for many plants and can alleviate abiotic stress salinity, extreme temperatures and, drought,… which led to enhance germination and improve growth for many plants, whether naturally occurring in the plant or by adding it to the plant in its artificially formed or in the form of bio- or nano-fertilization in order to increase the productivity and improve its efficiency under extreme conditions.

Plant Hormones and their Role in Plant Growth and Development

Plant hormones are regulators of almost all aspects of plant development and plant responses to their environment.

Understanding Plant Hormones

Auxin , any of a group of plant hormones that regulate growth, particularly by stimulating cell elongation in stems. Auxins also play a role in cell division and differentiation, in fruit development, in the formation of roots from cuttings, in the inhibition of lateral branching apical dominance , and in leaf fall abscission. This hormone affects plants by its action on chemical bonds of carbohydrates comprising plant cell walls. The process permits the cells to be irreversibly altered and is accompanied by the entry of water and the synthesis of new cell wall material. In addition to promoting normal growth in plant length, IAA and other auxins influence the growth of stems toward the light phototropism and against the force of gravity geotropism. The phototropic response occurs because greater quantities of auxin are distributed to the side away from the light than to the side toward it, causing the shaded side to elongate more strongly and thus curve the stem toward the light.

Hormones get things done. Think of them as chemical messengers that are made in one place in the body and deliver their message in a totally different place in the body. And just like hot sauce, a little goes a long way. Hormones are usually found in very small concentrations, but boy to they pack a punch! We know hormones cause a lot of changes in humans ah, puberty , but did you know that plants have hormones, too? Plants miss out on all the fun of body hair, acne, and voice changes, but read on to learn about the amazing effects that hormones have on plant growth and development!
