One may wonder that drug dealers should stoop so low as to shape amphetamines as candy to appeal to children. One may marvel that someone at a local car dealer would sell a car valued at no more than $25,000 to someone with signs of dementia at a total cost of $50,000. One is aghast to learn of an inmate casually murdering fellow inmates in hopes of getting the death penalty. When one believes the Bible, this behavior should come as no surprise. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). Jesus Christ confirmed the word of this Old Testament prophet: “Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adultery, fornication, thefts, false witness, blasphemies” (Matthew 15:19). Our culture refuses to believe that this describes everyone, hence the surprise.
Yet this is why the Scripture teaches people to pray for “a clean heart and a right spirit” (Psalm 51). Jesus said, “Except a person is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:4) Jesus Christ came to redeem you from this empty existence (1Peter 1:18) and give you a new life.
