To the casual observer who knows little about gardening or farming it would appear that the person scattering seed on the ground is wasting good seed. Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground” (Mare 4:26f). In several parables Jesus compared preaching and teaching the Word of God to sowing seed. To the cynic and skeptic this appears to be a waste of time and effort. He may reply, “Why should I attend church on Sunday morning. I’ve heard all that before. Besides, I had rather hang out with my friends, play video games, or sleep in.”
God would remind the skeptic that just as the seed in a mysterious fashion sprouts, grows, and produces a harvest, so God’s Word accomplishes “what He pleases and prospers in the thing for which He sends it” (Isaiah 55:11). “Faith comes through hearing the Word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). By the Word of Christ He defends us from the attacks of the devil (Ephesians 6: 10f). Through the promises that we have in Christ, the believer can be confident that when the “tent” of this body must be “folded up,” he has “a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Cor. 5:1). Come to Peace Lutheran Church to receive of this seed. Sunday service time is 10:00 a.m.
